Becoming Licensed
In Minnesota, family child care must meet standards for caregiver qualifications, physical environment, number of children per caregiver, behavior guidance, required policies and records, activities, and equipment. Click here for a general overview of these standards.
Contact your local social services agency to request an application and information about the licensing process. At the time of application, the applicant and all specified household members must have a background study. A fire inspection may also be required under certain conditions. You may also need to attend a licensing orientation meeting to review the licensing standards and learn more about the licensing process.

Family child care is for 10 children or less at one time. No more than 6 children may be younger than school age. (Class A)
Group family child care is for up to 14 children at a time. (Class C1, C2, C3)
Specialized Infant/Toddler License is for infants and toddlers only, no preschoolers. (Class B1, B2, D)
